Mr. Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Railways and Commerce & Industry, reviewed the development of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation India Limited (DFCCIL), a Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways. Mr. Tribhuvan Darbari, MD & CEO – Texmaco (Adventz Group), says, “The project is highly important since, at present, freight trains do not get priority over passenger trains. Once completed, at least 70% of the freight trains will be transferred on the DFCCIL network which will help in the timely movement of cargo.”

During the review meeting by Mr. Piyush Goyal, the officials of DFCCIL informed him about the current status of the project. Western Corridor connecting Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Mumbai and Eastern Corridor starting from Sahnewal near Ludhiana (Punjab) to terminate at Dankuni in West Bengal is estimated to be completed by December 2021.

Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) is one of the largest rail infrastructure projects undertaken by the Government of India. The total cost is estimated at about Rs 81,459 crores. DFCCIL has been set up especially to undertake planning, development, mobilization of financial resources, construction, maintenance and operation of Dedicated Freight Corridors. In the first phase, the DFCCIL is constructing the Western DFC (1,504 Route km) and Eastern DFC (1,856 route km) spanning a total length of 3360 route km.

The Ministry of Railways had initiated the dedicated freight corridor (DFC) project under the direction of the Indian Government. With an objective to provide a safe and efficient freight transportation system, the project involves the construction of six freight corridors traversing the entire country.

How freight corridor will help businesses?
E-commerce companies and automobile companies will be able to transfer freight through railways once the dedicated freight corridor project is completed. Private containers can also use the freight corridor but they have to pay track usage charges. Therefore, the Dedicated Freight Corridor project is significant. DFCCIL will monitor the movement of freight trains at the Operations Control Centre in Prayagraj. The Operations Control Centre in Prayagraj is the second-largest in the world after Shanghai, China.
